Lawmaker says he wants to reclaim Utah lands ( Sagebrush Rebellion )

A state lawmaker said Friday he wants to reclaim Utah's lands and resources from the federal government so the public can use them for recreation and energy development. Rep. Michael Noel, R-Kanab, said he's declaring another Sagebrush Rebellion. The original Sagebrush Rebellion took place in the 1970s and 1980s, when a coalition of mining and grazing interests pressured federal policy makers to cede greater control of federal lands to state and local authorities. Noel said that Utah can "take care of itself," and that the federal government shouldn't be allowed to regulate what the state can do with its own...

Managers luxe life on the line in Bernard Madoff case

GREENWICH, Conn. Walter Noel Jr. and his wife Monica had it all: Luxurious houses on Connecticuts wealthy coast, Palm Beach and the Hamptons, a Park Avenue pied-a-terre and, most of all, a hilltop retreat on an exclusive island in the Caribbean named after a goddess. They hobnobbed with Mick Jagger and Tommy Hilfiger, who sounded a bit jealous of their view. The couples five tall, attractive daughters mostly married foreign men in high social circles, adding to an extraordinary network of international connections that along with remarkably consistent returns helped Noel expand his New York-based money management firm with...

Cold River: A Case Study (A Blogger Uncovers Arafat's Murder of U.S. Diplomats)

In June 2002 I wrote a column for the Minneapolis Star Tribune regarding Yasser Arafat's responsibility for the 1973 assassination of two United States State Department officers -- Ambassador Cleo Noel and charge d'affaires Curtis Moore -- in Khartoum, Sudan. The column was based on accounts of the events in David Korn's Assassination in Khartoum, Neil Livingstone and David Halevy's Inside the PLO, and the testimony of former National Security Agency analyst Jim Welsh. Welsh has doggedly purused the story for over thirty years as a result of his personal involvement in disseminating a warning relating to the communications intercepted...

Could the Birth of Christ have been on Dec. 25?

These days its routine to hear from multiple sources the almost flipant dismissal that "of course Jesus wasn't born on Christmas!" or "everyone knows Jesus must have been born in August." or "He had to have been born in the Spring" or any number of speculative prognostifications serving to spoil the season. I've even heard this from the pulpit ... in evangelical churches no less "we know that Jesus wasn't born in December, but its a time to celebrate Advent anyway..." The fact of the matter though, the historical record is anything but clear when Jesus "had to be born."...
